The Angliru: the ultimate cycling challenge in the heart of Asturias
24/06/2025Every year, in autumn, between the end of September and the first fortnight of October, the Alto del Angliru becomes the stage for one of the most demanding races in the Asturian sports calendar: the foot race that climbs its steep ramps. In 2024, the event was held on Sunday, October 13, a day that brought together runners from all over the world ready to face this colossus of the Sierra del Aramo.
The race, organized by the Actitude Club in collaboration with the Riosa City Council, is part of the XXI Subida al Angliru, which includes modalities such as time trial cycling, walkers, rollerski and combined, where cyclists and runners join in mixed teams. This variety of disciplines makes the event a celebration of mountain sports, attracting participants of different disciplines and levels.
The foot race, starting in La Vega de Riosa, covers a distance of 13.1 km with a positive elevation gain of 1,267 meters. Runners must overcome ramps that in some sections reach 23.5% slope, as in the famous Cueña les Cabres, one of the most feared and emblematic points of the route.
Despite the toughness of the course, the race has a unique atmosphere. Participants are cheered on by the public at every turn, and many agree that the experience is as rewarding as it is demanding. The beauty of the scenery, the camaraderie among runners and the personal challenge of reaching the summit make this race an unforgettable experience.
In the 2024 edition, the runner from Salamanca, Verónica Sánchez, achieved a time of 1 hour, 16 minutes and 39 seconds, setting a new record in the women's category and beating the previous record of Oihana Kortazar. This achievement underlines the quality and competitiveness of the race, which every year attracts high-level athletes.
In addition to the main race, the event included the Anglirín, a children's race held on Saturday, October 12 in the streets of La Vega, allowing the youngest riders to experience the thrill of climbing the Angliru.
The Angliru Climb is not only a sporting event; it is a celebration of endurance, self-improvement and community spirit. Each edition leaves its mark on those who participate and on those who cheer from the sidelines, consolidating itself as one of the most awaited events of the Asturian autumn.
The date for 2025 is September 28.
