Viapará: nature, views and family entertainment in the heart of Riosa
24/06/2025In the heart of the Concejo de Riosa, between chestnut forests and old mining operations, is one of those routes that surprise for its beauty, history and accessibility: the Senda del Pozo Esperanza. With a little more than 3 km (6 km if you do a round trip), this soft and familiar walk offers an experience in contact with the Asturian nature, ideal for a quiet morning or an autumn afternoon.
The route begins in the village of Villamer, a small rural jewel that preserves the flavor of the authentic. From there, a wide and comfortable path -most of it with a forest track surface- gradually gains altitude, surrounded by native vegetation. The ascent is bearable and allows to enjoy the environment without haste: oak, hazel and chestnut trees accompany the walker, along with the remains of buildings linked to the old mining activity in the area.
The name of the path refers to the Pozo Esperanza, an old mining well now in disuse, testimony of the time when coal marked the pulse of life in the valleys of Riosa and Morcín. Although silence reigns today, you can still see structures that recall the industrial past of the council.
One of the great attractions of the route is the viewpoint from which La Foz de Morcín can be seen. On clear days, the views are impressive: the visitor can see a large part of the Caudal valley, the surrounding mountains and, in the distance, the outline of the city of Oviedo. It is a perfect place to stop, take a deep breath and enjoy the tranquility offered by this little known, but very special corner.
The Senda del Pozo Esperanza is suitable for almost everyone, including children and people with minimal physical condition. There are no major technical difficulties, and the environment is safe and welcoming. The return is along the same route.
From Aires del Aramo apartments we encourage you to discover this small treasure of the council.
